Mounted Infantry at War by Capt. Stratford St. Leger

On 12 November 1899, General Lord Methuen assembled a fighting column of 8 000 troops at the Orange River to relieve Kimberley. The author, a company commander with the mounted infantry, travelled light, something the British had learned from the highly mobile Boers. It took the column until 15 February 1900 to reach Kimberley and relieve it. Afterwards the author took part in the occupation of Bloemfontein and the advance on Pretoria.
