The
Welensky Papers - A History of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland
by JRT Wood
The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, like the Crusader Kingdom of
Jerusalem, now looks like an aberration of History — a curious deviation from
the inevitable course of events, a backward eddy in the river of time. It lasted
only 10 years. It began with a 19-gun salute when its first Governor-General,
Lord Llewellyn, steamed into Salisbury station on a heavy overcast day on 4
September 1953. It faded out at midnight on 31 December 1963. Lord Malvern
(Godfrey Huggins) one of its architects and its first Prime Minister, was asked
earlier that day whether he was distressed at its end. ‘No,’ he replied, ‘I
shall have my usual whisky with dinner. Then I shall go to bed and allow the
Federation to pass away in my sleep.’
