Rhodes used his vast fortune in pursuit of a ruthless
ideal: a world mapped in the red of the British Empire, where in the Anglo-Saxon
race would dispense law, order and the benefits of civilisation to the farthest
corner of the globe. If this dream now seems quaintly outdated, and an excuse
for the racism and the brutalities of the course of empire, it must also be
acknowledged that Rhodes’s views were shared by his countrymen.
There might be arguments about his legacy, but what can never be denied is that
his Rhodes’ Scholarships have trained and educated countless leaders ranging
from US Presidents to British Prime Ministers and judges of the High Courts
around the English-speaking world.
